Jerry,
I still work with pencil, straightedge, and compass but no drawing board and T-square. I made up a drawing form using "Cadstd" that has a title block an a faint grid at 5 squares/inch.
Am having increasing trouble learning to use new software.
Keenan said that he found my site while searching for information on gear cutting. Seems to be a very capable and engaged guy. I would gladly write him a recommendation letter when he is ready to look for a job.

Excellent post. Although I must say --- I doubt the student "somehow stumbled" across your blog. I expect he was deliberately searching for a blog site with careful, well-dimensioned drawings, good photography and production documentation, and succinct writing. Your site offers the perfect starting point for a classroom project such as this.
Which leads me to ask: Do you still create your production drawings manually, or have you set aside the drafting board and t-square?

Here is a link to a rather lengthy discussion of registers and face plates:

By the way - the new mini lathes come with a sort of face-plate on the spindle where the threads were. The matching chucks go on with just 3 screws - volia! Perfect alignment

Alan,
Thank you for providing me with terminology. So my take on this is that the threads and the diameter behind the threads (slightly smaller than thread root diameter) form a "spigot". Behind these is a flat surface called "register". If the register were not perfectly normal to the axis of the threads, we would not get proper centering of the chuck. The chuck itself also has a register, and it is just as important as that of the spindle.
22 May 2013: Terminology wrong. Substitute relief for spigot in the above.

Regarding your 'spigot' on the lathe spindle: I believe that the flat surface after the threads is called the 'register' and is there for the purpose of matching up with a like surface on the back of the chuck. This is what pulls it into 'register' and accounts for the accuracy.

In my shop of the past I had to machine some face plates to be able to attach other chucks and getting the register (as well as the mating OD of the face plate was part of the 'challenge'!

Alex,
I decided on Delrin only after much testing. See the blog post of 23 Aug 2011, "Pawl Test at Higher Speed" for a summary.
My conclusion is that Delrin will outlast any metal in this application. No one has shown me any data to contradict this.
